Alana Is Reading: Knitter does NOT equal "grandma"

fuckyeaholdladycrafts:

alanaisreading:

Okay, so it is not just insulting to other knitters when you tag your knitting with “granny” or “grandma”, it is also insulting to grandmothers.

Let me explain why: Your grandmother was not born a grandmother. She did not suddenly acquire the “knitting skills” achievement when she leveled up to…

IMO, people are probably tagging knitting things as “grandma,” etc. as a form of self-deprecating humor. I’ve basically thrown the giant “geriatric!” blanket over all sewing, knitting, etc. crafts on this blog because that’s the stereotype I’ve encountered. It’s not meant to be insulting. It’s meant to be light-hearted.

What do you guys think?

I understand that it is meant to be self-deprecating, but whenever you post something in the knitting tag saying, “I’m such a granny for knitting,” you are posting it in a place to be read by other knitters, to whom you are saying, “You’re such a granny for knitting.”  That’s not necessarily a fair message.

Yeah, that’s the stereotype.  That doesn’t make it right.  Stereotypes are never right.

I’m not saying your entire blog shouldn’t exist or anything.  You’re being up front with the joke, and if I go to fuckyeaholdladycrafts I know what I’m going to get and if I don’t like it, I don’t follow that blog.  But tagging things puts them in a public forum where I have every right to question the fairness and truth of stereotypes I’m subjected to.
